ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to appoint FBR Chairman Tariq Bajwa as Finance Secretary, sources told Customs Today.
Sources said that Tariq Bajwa will replace incumbent Finance Secretary Waqar Masood in the middle of August. Seat of FBR Chairman will be vacant after posting of Tariq Bajwa to the office of Finance Secretary. The federal government has also started mulling over several names for the post of FBR chairman. Top of the list are names of two members of FBR including Member Inland Policy Shahid Hussain Asad and Member Admin Shahid Hussain Jatoi. However, the list includes names of other members as well.
As per sources of Finance Ministry, consent of international financial institutions has also been sought and they have reportedly reposed their confidence in Tariq Bajwa.
According to sources, FBR Chairman Tariq Bajwa will soon go to the US and it is expected that he will hold meetings with heads and representatives of these financial institutions. Tariq Bajwa will also be the part of the team of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to hold discussions with IMF. It is worthy to note that Tariq Bajwa is said to be the closest companion of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and during his posting in Punjab he had been working closely with the Finance Minister. However, sources disclosed that Bajwa is very close to Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif, even more than Ishaq Dar. That’s why Shahbaz Sharif’s role remains very crucial in the appointments at the federal level. It is doubtless to say that Tariq Bajwa, an able and devoted civil servant, was picked as FBR Chairman giving him edge over other senior FBR members for this key post. Sources said that if process of finalizing the next FBR chairman gets delayed, then Member Inland Revenue Shahid Hussain Asad will be acting FBR chairman during this period.
