JAMAICA: Customs officers arrested a woman who allegedly tried to smuggle $88,000 of cocaine into JFK inside her green backpack.
Customs officers stopped 50-year-old Segunda De La Rosa when she returned to NYC from Santiago, Dominican Republic. Officers inspected her backpack, which was unusually thick and heavy, and reported finding panels filled with white powder that tested positive for cocaine.
De La Rosa’s alleged hiding place was relatively unimaginative compared to some of the other JFK passengers arrested for smuggling cocaine into New York City. There was the man caught with cocaine tucked in picture frames, a woman carrying cocaine in her luggage handrails and a woman who allegedly packed her girdle and underwear with the powder.
Customs officials allegedly found five pounds of cocaine in De La Rosa’s backpack — about $88,000 worth of the drug. She was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.
Ms. De La Rosa, who lives in New York City, now faces federal narcotics smuggling charges and will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York.
